Project summary

The University of Strathclyde’s project uses enzymes to repair or improve cement barriers to block the migration pathways, preventing the flow of hydrocarbons to surface in wells that have been plugged and abandoned.

The low viscosity and nanoparticle size enables it to penetrate and seal the smallest of spaces, which cement grouts can struggle to achieve. The technology, currently being developed for other industries, will be assessed in typical downhole conditions to gather critical data on its performance and applicability as a well abandonment material.
