University of Strathclyde - LOCUST

Project summary

The OGTC is supporting the University of Strathclyde in developing the use of swarms of small unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, for internal and external visual inspection. This includes the use of digital imaging techniques that will remove the need for an offshore NDT technician / inspector to conduct the initial inspection. Drone swarms, which are being rapidly adopted by the military and for logistics activities, could deliver a safe, flexible and cost-effective alternative to human inspection.

Potential Industry Value

The autonomous visual inspection swarm of drones system has the potential to reduce the time taken to complete NII scopes on pressure vessels, instead assessing the initial visual inspection onshore, making it faster and safer; by removing the requirement for man entry into the vessel.
