Neil Gordon, Chief Executive, Subsea UK
Russell Stevenson, Industrial Director, The Oil & Gas Technology Centre
The UK Defence Solution Centre (UKDSC) in collaboration with Subsea UK on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the offshore industries have developed a Cross Sector Investment (CSI) initiative to address specific opportunities in relation to Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) which will deliver joint benefit to both sectors by developing a range of innovative emerging and enabling technology solutions.
Dialogue between representatives of the Royal Navy and Industry has identified a shared appetite to deliver disruptive solutions in subsea autonomous systems. Solutions need to be modular in design with common interfaces and open architectures that make unmanned operation the standard approach in both sectors.
In order to realise common solutions, an Innovation Lab competition is being run by Innovate-UK, backed by a multi-million pound fund provided by UK MOD centre, Royal Navy, and public and private counterparts within the Offshore Energy Sector. Come along to find out more...
Neil initially studied business in Aberdeen, going on to train as a commercial diver and spending eight years carrying out numerous diving assignments in the UK and Norwegian waters, involving new construction projects, pipeline surveys, welding and inspection.
He has over 25 years' management experience in director and business development roles, combined with over 15 years in the subsea industry.
Prior to joining Subsea UK, he spent four years managing the National Hyperbaric Centre which included project-managing saturation diving operations and hyperbaric weld trials. He more recently developed the subsea safety training and consultancy aspect of the business, where he regularly lectured to subsea engineers and delivered a range of training courses both in the UK and overseas.
He has experience working in India, Middle-east, Africa and Brazil and has worked with the Oil and Gas Producers diving operations sub-committee on client representative training and competency for subsea projects. He was also an active member of the IMCA diving safety, medical, technical and training committee.
As Industrial Director, Russell works closely with principal academic partners, the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University, industrial partners and other academic institutions, to establish two centres focused on decommissioning and subsea engineering.
A chartered engineer, Russell joined the OGTC following a 25-year career at Amec Foster Wheeler (latterly known as Worley Parsons). He was most recently Vice President, Asset Support responsible for leading the operations and maintenance project group. Russell also has an MBA and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
