Richard Neilson, Centre Director of the National Decommissioning Centre

Laser cutting of steel is a fairly standard method within the manufacturing sector, however its deployment underwater for decommissioning presents some challenges as well as some potential advantages. The new range of high-power fibre lasers removes some of the problems associated with older technology and provides unique opportunities for remote deployment to assist with decommissioning.

Richard will discuss the background to the project and the advantages of underwater laser cutting. The discussion will cover the current status, target endpoint and a summary of the project. Results from previous lab workshops will be presented to showcase the development of the project.

Professor Richard Neilson, director of the National Decommissioning Centre, has led and had substantial involvement in 11 major joint industry/University projects. Richard is currently leading the University's input to a joint project with Claxton Engineering to develop an underwater laser cutting tool for decommissioning. He has been researching in aspects of decommissioning since 2008 and was one of the instigators of the MSc in Decommissioning run by Aberdeen University.
