4D Assisted Seismic History Matching –using 4D seismic data for improved reservoir model predictions.

Time-lapse or 4D seismic data provides additional information on the dynamic behaviour of a producing reservoir over the well production data alone. 4D Seismic History Matching (4D SHM) is the process of matching the reservoir model to both the well production data and the 4D seismic data through optimisation of the reservoir model’s properties. This increases confidence in the history matched reservoir model and its subsequent predictions and forecasts.

Typically, 4D SHM workflows are applied by qualitative comparison of the real and synthetic 4D seismic – generated from the simulation model – and manual updates of the reservoir model by trial-and-error. 4D Assisted Seismic History Matching (4D ASHM); however, is an emerging technology that attempts to automatically update the reservoir model through quantitative comparisons and uncertainty quantification of the 4D seismic data.

This presentation will describe the 4D SHM workflow and show how a genetic DE algorithm can be used in a 4D ASHM optimization scheme. This has been applied to the Harding South Field in the Central North Sea with some promising results that will be discussed. Many challenges remain for 4D ASHM and the presentation will conclude with a brief discussion of the strengths and limitations of 4D SHM as well as some directions of current research and development.

What is Tech20?

Tech20 features world-leading experts, exploring the latest tech trends, asking big questions and sharing big ideas.  Tech20 is a social showcase for speakers presenting technology focussed topics in 20 minutes or less.

A unique format. 20-minute lunch, 20-minute presentation, 20-minute Q&A.

Tech20s aim to inspire & innovate, discover new or surprising technologies, challenge technologies and release the spark within!

Our weekly Tech20 events are open to everyone of all ages, from all industries and professions and are free to attend.
