Nick Brown, Data Architect, EPCC at the University of Edinburgh

It's difficult to avoid the hype around big data and machine learning, but actually in reality it's a fairly simple challenge - many businesses either currently hold or are capable of collecting significant amounts of data about their operation, but it isn't necessarily clear to them how to successfully leverage this to generate valuable insight. Many would have us believe that throwing a bit of machine learning at some data will result in answers, but this is simply not true and in reality, to get real value from data it is far more nuanced and requires expertise in a number of different areas. Here at the University of Edinburgh we have this expertise and have been successfully working with industry partners for a long time to help them grow their business by successfully exploiting data. In this talk I will focus on a couple of industrial case study examples where we have generated real benefit for companies by successfully exploiting their data using a variety of methods.

Dr Nick Brown is a data architect at EPCC, which is the UK’s leading supercomputing centre and, amongst other things, hosts the UK national supercomputer, ARCHER. Nick has interests in machine learning, data engineering, parallel programming language design, and compilers. He has worked on numerous data science and parallel computing projects, both in the research and industrial space, such as machine learning for optimising petrophysical workflows, and the development of MONC, an atmospheric model used by the UK climate & weather communities. Nick is a course organiser on EPCC's MSc in HPC course, as well as supervising MSc and PhD students.
